Hints and known bugs

Windows save folder

Open %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star\ in File Explorer. Joric's current wiki identifies default\Status.sokoban_status inside it; a Reddit reply independently names the same parent folder. Close the game before making a dated copy of the entire game folder.[1][2]

Find the Order of the Sinking Star save location

  1. Close the game normally so it is no longer writing progress.
  2. Paste %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star\ into File Explorer's address bar. This expands to your Windows account's user folder.
  3. Inspect the existing contents. The documented default-profile status file is default\Status.sokoban_status. If your folder differs, preserve what exists rather than creating a replacement file with that name.

The folder path is corroborated by two community sources; the specific status-file name comes from Joric alone. Checked October 16, 2026. This site has not opened a player's local save.[1][2]

Back up the folder without replacing progress

  1. Copy the whole folder. Use Copy, then paste it into a separate backup location. Keep the original folder in place.
  2. Date the copy. For example, name the backup folder Order-of-the-Sinking-Star-2026-10-16-before-update. This is an example name, not a required game file.
  3. Check the copy. Open it and confirm its subfolders and files are present. Keep an older backup rather than repeatedly replacing your only copy.
  4. Record the situation. Note the game update date, affected level and whether that level was complete. Those details help distinguish a level-version reset from a whole-save failure.

This is a conservative file-copy workflow, not a tested restoration procedure. Joric describes the status format as binary; do not edit it as a text file or rename it to force a different result.[1]

A copy is not proof that lost puzzle progress can be restored

The October 15 Steam notes describe a forced reset of partial progress in the first Skipping Stones level after the October 14 patch. Other progress is unaffected according to the developer. A copied older save does not establish compatibility with a newer level version, and we have no verified procedure to bypass that reset.[3]

For that exact symptom, use the dated patch explanation before trying file replacement. For a different loss, retain the original and backup and report the precise level and version; do not overwrite the only remaining evidence.

Steam Deck, Linux and consoles

The path above is the Windows location. We have not verified an equivalent current-profile path inside this game's Proton prefix, or a PS5/Switch 2 restore workflow. Do not paste the Windows path unchanged into a different platform or infer cross-save support from a shared game title.
